After having their ESB yesterday, I thought it only fitting that I finish off my Fuller’s beers sequentially. This is their flagship beer, the one everyone talks about at the ole pubs here in town.

Knowing that it was a bitter, I was prepared to make a few faces once I started drinking it. But you know what? Either my tastes have changed or this beer wasn’t as bitter as they claim. I liked it. It had a bitterness to it, for sure, but it wasn’t overpowering. I could stomach the whole can, no problem.

Overall, very nice. If I see it on tap at a bar… I might just order one.

ESB… Extra Special Bitters. Yup, at least I know what I’m in for here; traditional bitter English ale. And that’s exactly what it was but it wasn’t that bad. It definitely had a bitterness to it but I didn’t find it harsh, even though it’s a strong beer.

The can says it’s a Champion Ale, and in looking at their website, it won best strong beer on 7 different occasions, more than any other beer. So I guess it’s the best England has to offer. Doesn’t say much for that other strong English beer I have in my fridge…

A new country! Woohoo! And a pretty good beer to boot. We have a guest with us today, our friend Matt who recommended Kronenbourg a while back.

When I poured it out for us to share, it was Lipton Chicken Noodle Soup yellow! Thankfully it tasted much better. It had a distinct bitterness that went away after a bit with zero aftertaste. At 4.9%, I can see drinking a lot of this brew in a sitting.

In researching the beer afterwards, I discovered some fun facts:

1) The Zlatorog is a mythical goat thing from Slovenian culture
2) There is a professional basketball team called the  Zlatorog Laško

Wells IPA

Not doing so well with matching food and beer. Before it was Crazy Canuck Pale Ale and garlic burgers and last night it was Wells IPA and nachos.

Wells IPA is made by the same people who brought us Crest Super, and we all know how that went. When I opened it and smelled beer, traditional English beer, my first impression of it was “meh”. It kind of tasted flat but it still had some head on it so I knew that wasn’t the case.

Overall, it went down easy. I was able to pair it with my nachos and not regurgitate any of it but it was a very forgettable beer.
